You’re viewing the League’s page on Scorebook.com, the national web site where you find schedules, scores, rosters, and updates, but have you visited our League’s own www.azmsbl.com? There you will find league rules, forms, photos, and the AZMSBL NEWSLETTER.

The AZMSBL Board is instituting a new feature on our website designed for the enjoyment, baseball education, and increased interaction amongst our approximately 850 member players. We will feature baseball controversies, scoring dilemmas, insights on our members, baseball quizzes, technology and equipment articles, and medical and health highlights. The Executive Board and the Newsletter Board strongly solicit your ideas and your participation. The Newsletter Board consists of AZMSBL President, Lou McAnany; Vice President, John Silingo; Head Umpire, Mark Hratko; former major-league player, Brian Kingman; Executive Board member, Ernie Barten; and Executive Board member and Editor, Eric vanSonnenberg.

AZMSBL NEWSLETTER 1
Is the strike zone the same to and for everyone? Probably not. Read an interesting piece on the strike zone from the perspective of a pitcher by Brian Kingman, a catcher by John Silingo, a hitter by Eric vanSonnenberg, and by head umpire Mark Hratko.

An ongoing feature on “Get to Know Our Players”

SO YOU WANT TO BE AN UMPIRE? Read what former professional umpire, Mark Hratko, has to say. Check it out and see if you have what it takes. And then take a shot on how well you know the rules of the game!

Rotator cuff injuries are discussed by Eric vanSonnenberg, MD.

AZMSBL NEWSLETTER 2
This is the second edition of the AZMSBL Newsletter with a variety of articles, quizzes, photos, and insights about the game we all love, baseball. In this edition you'll find the following:
--An article by former major league and current AZMSBL pitcher Brian Kingman on his encounter with baseball luminary Sandy Koufax, & stories of his big league career
-- Player and manager profiles on: AZMSBL President Lou McAnany, Executive Board members Ernie Barten and Joe O'Brien, Managers Mike Seaver (Phillies) and Larry Pickert (Cubs)
--A quiz and interpretation of controversial baseball rules by head umpire Mark Hratko
--A short piece on the heroism and humility of a medical doctor and shortstop who plays in the AZMSBL
--Baseball trivia by Board member Ernie Barten
--An article with photos, MRI and operative images, and an Angels major-league hopeful as an example of a current baseball medical epidemic--Tommy John Surgery, by Eric vanSonnenberg, MD

We hope you enjoy the above articles. The authors obviously share our love of baseball. We actively welcome your input on these articles and those in Newsletter 1. In addition, we would love to hear from you about ideas you may have for upcoming articles or topics, and certainly would be pleased to have you actively participate in upcoming AZMSBL Newsletters.

On behalf of the editorial board (Lou McAnany, John Silingo, Brian Kingman, Mark Hratko, Ernie Barten), give us your feedback and enjoy AZMSBL Newsletter 2.
Eric vanSonnenberg, Editor

Billy Doyle, long time member of the AZMSBL (Diamondbacks and Hawks) died on August 13, at his home. Billy was well-liked by teammates and all who knew him. Billy was a humble man – thinking he wasn’t good enough to play, but once he was convinced to keep playing, Billy became a productive member of the teams.

Billy retired from the Air Force in 2000 as a Master Sergeant. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Melody and two daughters, Dani and Brandie, granddaughter Zoe, father Larry, two brothers, John and David, and nieces and nephews.

Billy will be missed, especially by his Hawks teammates. RIP Billy Doyle!

Terry Gammill, manager of the Hawks, received a notice from Billy's family that Billy had requested to be cremated and therefore they are not having a formal funeral. The memorial service will be at his uncle's cabin in Dewey between 12 and 2 PM on this Saturday. The address is 14430 N. Lazy River Drive 86327. I am sure anyone from the league is invited. I will be unable to attend as I have committed to work this Saturday weeks ago.
